We celebrate the meetings that took place in Stockholm 1925 and Nicaea 325.

The year 2025 was an ecumenical milestone. The Christian Council of Sweden – churches together, have taken a decisive step to inspire fellowship and peace for our society now and in the future by referring to several historic and ecumenical events.

In 1925, Archbishop Nathan Söderblom initiated the Universal Christian Conference on Life and Work. In 2025, we celebrate 100 years since that conference was held.

In 2025 it will be 1700 years since the first ecumenical church council was held in Nicaea in 325 AD and will be celebrated in many places around the world. Emperor Constantine invited between 250-300 Christian bishops from the whole Roman Empire to discuss and seek to unite the church on various issues concerning theology and church structure.

The purpose of the Ecumenical Year is to

  • contribute to peace in troubled times.
  • strengthen ecumenical unity and fellowship.

The theme of peace is just as important today as in 1925.

Unity is the gift that God gives to the church in order to serve a wounded and broken world, for the survival of mankind and the planet.
