Qalandiya checkpoint 11 september 2009
Destroying livelihoods in East Jerusalem
East Jerusalem, the large swathes of occupied Palestinian land Israel has annexed to the Jerusalem Municipality, sees some of the most intensive demolition and settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territories. The authorities work with settler groups to create a demographic reality favouring Jews at the expense of Palestinians. This is done through settlement expansion, bureaucratic discrimination, and demolition of Palestinian owned properties - even animal shelters.
The housing crisis in East Jerusalem
Israel's discriminatory planning system often forces Palestinians to build homes 'illegally'. The Jerusalem municipality's refusal to grant Palestinians building permits is linked to an official drive to ensure a Jewish majority in the city of Jerusalem. Hundreds of Palestinians, having saved for years to build homes, have seen them demolished, and the pace of these demolitions is increasing. The impact on chances for a peaceful solution to the conflict is devastating. |
